About the artist Heiner Meyer

* 1953 Bielefeld

Heiner Meyer, born in Bielefeld in 1953, is among the best-known German pop artists. He was interested in art from a young age and began to paint while still a child. He had his first solo exhibition in Münster in 1972. This was followed in 1973 and 1974 by stays in London and Cadaqués, where Meyer worked as Salvador Dalí's assistant. In 1977 Meyer began his fine art studies at the Braunschweig University of Art, where he was named a master student. After that time he was not only awarded numerous prizes and grants but also taught, at the Braunschweig University of Art, the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences and elsewhere.

Meyer lives and works in Bielefeld. While his early works were dedicated to subjects such as Aphrodite, Hera, Athena and characters from classical mythology, he now creates collages from divas, vamps, stars, starlets and pin-ups like Grace Kelly, Liz Taylor, Jacqueline Kennedy, Penelope Cruz, Paris Hilton, Victoria Beckham and Heidi Klum, together with other luxury and status symbols such as cars, perfumes and fine foods. His work combines photography and painting. Heiner Meyer is among the internationally sought-after pop artists not only for his pictures but also for his sculptures. For these as well he first concentrated on classical sculpture and architecture until formally dedicating himself to pop art. Some of his best-known works include his bronze of the Hermés Birkin Bag entitled Most Wanted and the golden Dagobert Duck, which graces Galerie Kronsbein under the title Grosser Dagobert.

Meyer's works have been shown in 100 exhibitions, including at art fairs in Seoul, Paris, Miami Beach, Bologna and Chicago. Among other places, they can be found in the collections of the Braunschweig University of Art, the Fundació Miró in Barcelona, the Deutsches Postmuseum in Frankfurt am Main, the Contemporary Art Museum in Miami, the Museum für das Fürstentum Lüneburg in Lüneburg and the Sammlung Deutsche Fototage in Frankfurt.
