About the exhibition

At 90 years old, Alex Katz is remarkably fit and active. For the occasion of his 90th birthday, Galerie Kronsbein Munich presents a tribute to Katz from 6 to 17 October. The exhibition comprises about 70 works from different creative phases, executed using different techniques. Especially rare are portfolios such as "Black Dress" and "Ada and Alex", which are hardly ever seen in their original size – as shown at Galerie Kronsbein.

The born New Yorker considers himself as a forerunner of Pop Art. During the heyday of Abstract Expressionism in the 1950s, Katz began his larger-than-life and always minimalist portraits with a figurative character, in which he reflects the new American way of life. His wife Ada is a recurring and popular motif in Katz' works.

Born on 24 July 1927 in Brooklyn, New York, Katz studied at the Cooper Union in New York and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. Katz still lives and works in New York today. His works can be found in renowned collections and museums such as the MoMA (New York), the Whitney Museum (New York), the Tate Britain (London), the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa) and the Museum Brandhorst in Munich.
